KEYNOTE 3: VIRTUALIZATION

Paul Sikora, VP, IT Transformation, UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH MEDICAL CENTER

Over the past 5 years UPMC has transformed their data center infrastructure and processes.  As a result, UPMC is into the 5th year of running 95% of all their systems in a heavily virtualized environment.  This includes Windows, Unix (AIX and Linux) and Storage.

All of UPMC’s enterprise production, test, and training systems share the resources of what UPMC calls their “Private Cloud”. The performance and stability of the systems are improved and  the environment flexes to allow the systems to get processing cycles when needed.

Even in the face of growth in application and users that exceed 300%, Budgets and staffing have remained relatively flat, the data center is gaining open floor space, using less power and HVAC than it did 5 years ago.

Sikora lead the transformation project and currently manages the UPMC infrastructure teams supporting all UPMC’s infrastructure less Voice and Data.  In this presentation he will review the experience and results realized form this transformation.
