CASE STUDY: THE CONVERGENCE OF INFORMATION MODELING WITH MDM

Robert Kaku, Manager, Data Modeling Services, KAISER PERMANENTE
Greg McDonald, Data Management Solution Center Manager / Lead - Enterprise Data Administration, KAISER PERMANENTE

Kaiser Permanente (KP) is an integrated managed care consortium based in Oakland and operating in 10+ states. KP is the largest managed care organization in the US (9+ million members, 160K+ employees, 14K+ physicians and 37 medical centers with almost $50B revenues).  As a result of the Affordable Health Care Act, this non-profit integrated health system is both challenged and incented to become more business-to-consumer (B2C).  As part of this ongoing strategic transformation, key technologies such as MDM and Big Data need to be harnessed to help drive the transformation.  And necessarily both of these need to be managed by Data Governance to be efficient and effective. Having delivered KP’s HealthConnect®, a comprehensive electronic health record system that is one of the largest private electronic health systems in the world. KP HealthConnect and its integrated model securely connect more than 611 medical offices and 37 hospital medical centers, linking patients to their health care teams, their personal health information and the latest medical knowledge.

KP believes that healthcare's greatest days are ahead thanks to the rapid infusion of improved information-focused technologies the speakers are able to highlight a few of the in-flight master data initiatives at KP. They will discuss aspects of the vital Enterprise Master Person Index (EMPI) initiative, Financial Data Reporting Hierarchy Management and related matters in discussing these topics:

  • Modeling business-oriented information to define specific types & subtypes of master data & their relationships to achieve business buy-in
  • Extending the master data Information Models into implementable MDM models that recognize the importance of managing business, semantic & technical metadata
  • Leveraging MDM’s hierarchy management to provide multiple, flexible views to master data constituents – including the building blocks for EMPI

Instantiating governance for all of the above
