BEST PRACTICES: ENTERPRISE GOVERNANCE OF REFERENCE DATA

Tim Swan, Director of Data Quality Management, Data Management Office, MUFG UNION BANK, N.A.

Financial services firms are experiencing a period of rapid evolution in their data management practices which is being driven by a combination of regulatory and business demands for increased data quality and utility.† A firmís ability to manage its reference data (i.e., code sets, code values, and mappings) is one aspect of data management that is critical to serving the needs of a wide variety of data consumers inside and outside the organization.

In order to support this demand, MUFG Union Bank, a leading retail and commercial bank in the US, has recently redesigned its reference data governance operating model and supporting technology platform.† This case study describes the drivers behind this initiative, an overview of the implementation from a people / process / technology perspective, and key lessons learned:

  • Establishing a sustainable & scalable operating model for governing reference data
  • Leveraging cloud-based data governance tools to support rapid deployment & scalability
  • Driving business engagement in the reference data governance process
