BEST PRACTICES: MASTER DATA MANAGEMENT ON A BUDGET

Jose Solera, Chief Information Officer, LISI

Mr. Solera’s prior employer handles railroad data in North America. In 2010, its management received the following project request: “We need a ‘single version of the truth’ about our customers”.  The company had
numerous customer data sources that were not integrated together which led to inaccurate and duplicate information.  There was no consistently reliable source of customer information.  These silos of customer data hampered the company’s ability to operate efficiently in customer communications, sales, operations, marketing, product support, and billing.  Competing for multiple multi-year IT initiatives and projects, the MDM team received approval for a three-year program with limited funding, to integrate four systems.  By 2013, the last year of the program, seven systems had been integrated along with a CRM system that delighted the internal customers.
This presentation will provide insights into the planning and execution of “MDM on a Budget” by discussing these topics and more:

  • Launching & running an MDM effort among competing priorities & limited budget
  • Overcoming the unique data quality challenges due to Railinc’s role in the railroad industry
  • Leveraging the lessons learned & how to launch your own program
