CASE STUDY: REFERENCE DATA AS AN ENABLER OF MULTI-DOMAIN MDM

Kyle B. Smith, Director, Clinical Data Integration, SUTTER HEALTH

Healthcare providers are going through a time of radical change. The business of providing care to patients is being transformed by changes in federal and state law, creation of Accountable Care Organizations, changes in insurance programs, and the growth of Health Information Exchanges. Sutter Health, a leading healthcare organization in Northern California, has seen its business and technical leadership come together to support MDM as a mission critical, strategic initiative for its hospitals, clinics and physician offices. The focus on development of a single-instance, multi-domain MDM implementation has been accompanied by adoption of data quality metrics and dashboards. Reference Data standards have also emerged as a significant factor in bringing clarity to specific master data fields. This case study describes the primary success drivers behind Sutter Health’s MDM initiative, including:

  • Provisioning Reference Data standardization as a multi-domain MDM requirement
  • Establishing a productive relationship between Data Governance and the MDM initiatives
  • Using the multi-domain MDM strategy to enhance the value of data as a business asset
