BEST PRACTICES: BUSINESS-DRIVEN DATA GOVERNANCE OF REFERENCE DATA

Peter Kapur, Director Data Governance, Quality and Analytics, THE DEPOSITORY TRUST AND CLEARING CORPORATION

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) is a US post-trade financial services company providing clearing and settlement services to the financial markets. It provides a way for buyers and sellers of securities to make their exchange in a safe and efficient way. It also provides central custody of securities. Like many companies, DTCC faces the challenge of maintaining accurate reference data in an environment of mergers, corporate reorganizations and increased time-to-market pressures. Recognizing the need to leverage existing customer information, DTCC has implemented several initiatives that were successful using the principles of “lean but inclusive governance structures” that are business-driven in partnership with IT. At DTCC, business value criteria are applied to determine what business area or data needs to be managed beyond a localized view. While the Data Governance Council and Data Governance Advisory Board are business-led, they inclusive of all functional areas of the company and cater to stakeholder needs. This session will provide insights into deployment of non-intrusive Data Governance processes to rationalize legacy MDM hubs with the need for reference data governance by discussing topics such as:

  • Applying a business-centric problem-solving view of Governance before creating Enterprise-level policies.
  • Rationalizing metadata by distinguishing between Business, Technical and Operational metadata
  • Deploying near-term Data Governance initiatives to build credibility, identity and acceptance—i.e., Cloud-based analytics, derivatives messaging templates, I&R data templates and risk metadata
