BEST PRACTICES: BETTER DATA GOVERNANCE THROUGH BETTER REFERENCE DATA

Jeff Gentry, Director, Enterprise Data Governance, TD AMERITRADE
Jim Keevins, Director of Enterprise Data Architecture, TD AMERITRADE

Reference data management (RDM) provides a data governance capability similar to the general ledger for financial management. You can live without it, but itís hard to balance the books. It provides a means to govern how we classify, differentiate, reference, and analyze things represented by our data. Bringing together reference data into a single environment for governance and stewardship improves consistent use of the data, improves the quality of regulatory data, improves the results of analytics, improves interactions with our clients, and reduces the costs of data management. Reference master data can also provide a social hub to share classification schemes that result from, or lead to, innovation in the way we see our businesses.
In this session, the speakers will share concrete patterns for creating and managing mastered reference data, covering the following topics:

  • Understanding and leveraging the codependent relationship between Data Governance and RDM
  • Focusing on single trusted source of reference data, vs. application integration, as a priority for maximum business value
  • Bringing reference data and business glossaries together
