MAKING BIG DATA SMALLER: BIG DATA GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Anne Buff, Thought Leader, Cloud Strategy, Data Management, Data Governance, MDM & Data Integration, SAS BEST PRACTICES

Data governance and management practices have long attempted to achieve a number of key goals: is the data accurate, of high quality, structured properly, of valuable to the business, etc. As the adoption and integration of big data becomes more prevalent, these goals are still important, but new ones also arise, such as: speed, quantity, variety, discovery, exploration and insight. This shift and increased big data awareness is not only affecting data governance practices within organizations, but also the expectations of our customers as well. We like to refer to this as the Big Data Effect, where our data moves from being basic and static to comprehensive and dynamic; from descriptive to actionable and transformative; from controlled to accessible. From a customer standpoint, they now expect us to anticipate their needs and actions, they’re actively engaged with your brand, and they’re curious rather than accepting. In addition to a case study TBD, this presentation will highlight:

  • Implications and impact of big data on data governance and data management
  • Why big data governance/management matters and how it’s different
  • Barriers to implementing a big data governance program, and in effect enhancing your traditional data governance program
