BEST PRACTICES: ESTABLISHING A CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR MDM

Gustavo Espinosa, Team Lead, Solutions Integration, Information Technology, CITY OF BRAMPTON

With a population of more than 500,000, Brampton is the third-largest city in the Greater Toronto Area, and the ninth-largest city in Canada. Due to a number of converging factors in Toronto, Brampton has attracted residents and businesses due to its proximity to the Pearson International Airport and road infrastructure, population growth, cost of land and more favourable corporate tax structure. It is becoming a prime location for corporate head offices, factories, warehouses, etc., as well as the typical domestic goods and services required to provide for the population. To manage such growth and to increase the quality of civic services provided by the city government, the city established a Center of Excellence for MDM, that provides data quality and creates golden records through reliable services, processes, trained staff and MDM software. This session will showcase how such a progressive Canadian city is implementing MDM. Among other topics, it will highlight how this master data solution and its high-performance team support the city’s strategic objectives to leverage IT to continuously improve customer service and operational excellence, and enhance service delivery to clients, citizens, and businesses. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Determining the cost/benefits of an MDM-enabled data quality program
  • Working with the various city departments to establish governance of shared master data
  • Creating a future-oriented MDM infrastructure to allow for new sources of social, cloud and mobile services/channels
