Charles Bouvette, Enterprise Architect Customer MDM, DELL INC.
Robert J. Harris, MDM Technical Specialist, IBM SOFTWARE GROUP

Dell Inc. (Dell) is a global information technology company that offers its customers a range of integrated hardware, software and services solutions. As a top tier technology vendor for the last 30 years, and through its many recent acquisitions, Dell has amassed an immense set of customer data. As an early adopter of MDM, Dell leveraged internal development and packaged software to create an analytical MDM solution. However, fueled by regional and departmental authoring of customer data, the amount of data continues to grow relatively unconstrained, straining the analytical MDM capabilities, causing operational inefficiencies and organizational interoperability issues. With the focus on customer centricity and personalization continuing as major strategies, the company saw a need to establish tighter governance around the authoring of customer data. This case study examines the drivers behind the need to operationalize the Customer MDM platform and the steps needed to create a successful journey from one MDM implementation to another, including:

  • Understanding the stimulus that necessitate a strategic shift in MDM architectural styles
  • Establishing the strategy to control the change management process needed within both IT and the business to move from an analytical to operational MDM implementation
  • Examine how the IBM MDM platform supported multiple implementation approaches and eased the migration from one MDM style to another
