CASE STUDY: IMPLEMENTING MASTER DATA GOVERNANCE IN A GLOBAL ORGANIZATION

Jeff Lorge, Director of Enterprise Data Management, APPLIED MATERIALS

Applied Materials Inc. is an American corporation that manufactures innovative equipment, services and software to enable the manufacture of semiconductor, LCD displays and solar products. Applied Materials announced its merger with Tokyo Electron in September 2013. If approved by government regulators, the yet-to-be-named company would be the world's largest supplier of semiconductor processing equipment, with a total market value of approximately $29 billion.
Applied Materials is a large and complex environment with a diverse set of technologies as a result of multiple acquisitions. In 2007 the company started a global rollout of SAP and is fully committed to the SAP architecture including MDM, MDG and Info Steward. The Enterprise Data Management group acts as bridge between the business and IT and is responsible for defining Data Governance policies and MDM specifications for the global IT group.
In this session, the speaker will describe the scope and the value drivers of data governance at Applied Materials by discussing:

  • Planning for the maturity of MDG/MDM across the five key areas of customer, vendor, product, material and financial master data
  • Leveraging the collaborative model business and IT use to define MDM/MDG requirements
  • Masterminding the cross-organization roles and responsibilities for master data
