Track: Master Data Management: PIM & RDM Track View Track

Aaron Zornes, Chief Research Officer, THE MDM INSTITUTE

While Reference Data Management (RDM) solutions may be seen as a subset of MDM and therefore an easier set of products to evaluate as an organization's first MDM initiative, the market for RDM solutiions is not as easy to bifurcate as believed at first glance. For example,  multi-domain RDM solutions provide for non-industry specific solutions such as human resource data, ISO country codes and other non-volatile reference data to be mastered and shared while real-time RDM is very high performance solution for use in the capital markets industry (brokers, asset managers and securities services firms) as well as command and control military/intelligence markets. And then there is the dogma of RDM-via-custom-domain vs. native RDM. And hierarchy management system solutions built upon Microsoft MDS or Oracle DRM. Where does an organization begin its efforts? Naturally, by focusing on short term RDM requirements while ideally keeping the longer term/strategic MDM landscape in mind. On the other hand, many organziations are quite successful managing RDM as an extant master data solution independent of the broader Customer and Product master data domains. This session will do the cross-walk acrosss RDM and MDM solution sets in a structured market assessment and capabilities gap analysis to provide confidence in your initial or ongoing RDM efforts.

This session will focus on the "why" and "how" of RDM software and vendor evaluations by providing insight into:

  • Understanding the pros and cons of the dominant architectural models and evaluation criteria—e.g., ability to map/taxonomize reference data, versioning support, hierarchy management, scalability, etc.
  • Assessing the vendor landscape—e.g., multi-domain RDM vs. real-time RDM solutions, RDM-favored MDM, MDM-enabled RDM, on-premise/mega vendor vs. hosted/Cloud solutions
  • Applying a rigorous methodology to product evaluations for both mega vendor solutions (IBM, Oracle RDM, SAS, Teradata) and more pure play (Ataccama, Collibra, Orchestra Networks, Software AG)
