CASE STUDY: JOURNEY TOWARD BIG DATA GOVERNANCE AND DATA QUALITY

Barbara Latulippe, Senior Director, Enterprise Information Management, EMC, OFFICE OF ARCHITECTURE AND INNOVATION

EMC is a very large and innovative IT solutions provider—spanning hardware, software and services. Like other IT providers, EMC must engage the business to improve the value of the information used in Big Data analytics and operational processes. This session will highlight the experiences and best practices learned from a multi-year MDM and Data Governance endeavor. Key tactics used to mobilize cross-functional collaboration included: adoption of a Business Glossary for semantic reconciliation and ownership; delivery of Data Quality as a Service (DQaaS); establishment of a repeatable on-boarding methodology for any domain; and, rollout of "value stream mapping" for MDM analytics. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Establishing and communicating the cost of non-conformance for poor data quality
  • Leveraging Information Quality Governance Councils to adopt best practices, formal knowledge sharing, collaboration and internal communities for social feedback
  • Adopting an agile data governance approach to solve key business issues and deliver an innovation roadmap for information management
