BEST PRACTICES: WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE—BIG DATA MEETS MDM

Lloyd Mangnall, VP of Architecture and Quality, VHA INC.

VHA, Inc. is a national alliance of not-for-profit healthcare organizations. As an indispensable partner to more than 1,300 acute and 80,000 sub-acute healthcare providers, VHA sits in a unique position in healthcare. Its members look to VHA to cleanse, match and analyze hundreds of terabytes of healthcare data each day to provide actionable insight that will help them improve healthcare outcomes and lower the cost of care. Clearly, Enterprise Information Management is the foundation with MDM and Data Governance being the key pillars holding up that foundation to ensure accuracy of data, get the single version of truth, and streamline operational transactions. Recently, VHA began using Talend’s integration platform for several mission-critical initiatives, including VHA IMPERATIV™ and VHA LYNX™ to connect clinical, operational, supply and quality data to drive exceptional performance for hospitals and healthcare systems. Using Apache Cassandra and Apache Hadoop to analyze purchasing data from members, VHA is able to identify new savings opportunities and further decrease their overall cost of care. Combining Talend’s native support of NoSQL made it straightforward and fast to bring in Big Data, which consists of thousands of data sources and hundreds of terabytes aggregated for VHA's analyses. In this presentation, topics to be discussed include:

  • Acquiring and cleansing data at the scale of Big Data
  • Matching data in an imperfect world
  • Mastering the data universe via MDM, Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) and Data Quality
