CASE STUDY: MASTER DATA GOVERNANCE OF CUSTOMER IN THE LARGE ENTERPRISE

Shailender Vootla, MDM Lead, ASSOCIATED PRESS

Associated Press (AP) is the world's largest news media organization with customers spread across more than 150 countries. These customers were created and maintained in 15 different systems without any global data management and governance frameworks, thereby, arising important business challenges. AP has recently implemented an enterprise-wide MDM program consolidating customers, products and associated processes from all the systems. Establishing Data Quality and Data Governance procedures not only improved operational efficiencies but also provided better insight in learning about customers, increased sales and customer satisfaction, delivered accurate reporting capabilities for decision making and reduced operational and IT costs. Moreover, this highly complex IT project had to undergo myriad iterations of data cleansing, consolidation and enrichment activities. The session will outline how an enterprise can establish Data Governance and implement MDM in a complex environment by discussing insights related to key challenges and best practices in Data Quality and Data Governance. Topics to drive establishment of a Data Governance Framework include:

  • Inventorying the needs for customer Master Data Governance in a large enterprise
  • Implementing a Master Data repository to enable Data Governance and change management processes centered on "customer" and "product" data management
  • Applying customer data consolidation, D and B Enrichment, centralization and Global Data Synchronization harmonized processes across the system landscape
