BEST PRACTICES: MANAGING A BEST-IN-CLASS MULTI-DOMAIN MDM PLATFORM EVALUATION

Shenoy Karkala, Principal Architect—Enterprise Data and BI, MCAFEE
Sham Kashikar, Director—BI and Data Architecture, MCAFEE

McAfee recognized customer data as a key corporate asset and set out to build a best-in-class master customer capability to facilitate the company’s vision—to become the fastest growing security company in the world. Previously, McAfee developed an MDM and Data Governance program. The MDM Platform had architectural challenges to grow, run and optimize the business operations with operational (transactional) MDM to drive multi-tiered distribution model (consumer, corporate, distributors and resellers) and heterogeneous operational systems. In 2H2012, McAfee defined and executed a full spectrum MDM evaluation of several leading MDM platforms. Plans for 2013 and beyond include a Business Benefits/Metrics driven approach for ongoing implementation of the multiple MDM domains. This session will provide insights into the challenges and pitfalls of such a fast-paced, high pressure software procurement by providing insights into McAfee's successful evaluation process. In this session, McAfee will speak about the evaluation processes and what they are planning for 2013 by discussing:

  • Rationalizing "how much" multi-domain MDM is needed—when, where and how
  • Overcoming proof-of-concept limitations via reference checking (performance, scalability, etc.)
  • Securing active participation by cross-functional business stakeholders facilitated by IT
