BEST PRACTICES: DATA GOVERNANCE FROM THE DAMA-DMBOK PERSPECTIVE

Deborah Henderson, PMP, CDMP, Senior Data Governance Principal Consultant & Practice Manager, BROADSTREETDATA SOLUTIONS

This session will provide an overview of and practical use cases derived from the ongoing Data Management Book of Knowledge (DMBOK) project whose goal is to promote Data Governance as a unifying theory for Data Management. As a work in process, DMBOK2 adds "Data Integration & Interoperability" as new knowledge areas for the 2013 edition. Certain of the key contributors to this endeavor are classic Data Governance and Data Management professional organizations such as DAMA, Enterprise Architecture Professional Organization, IEEE, MIKE2.0, OMG, STAPO, TOGAF and University of Pennsylvania, facilitated by Gartner and Forrester consultants as well. This session will provide practical advice on how to leverage this crowd-sourced/online book of knowledge in the areas of MDM and Data Governance. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Learning to crosswalk among DMBOK, DMBOK2 and EABOK to provide practical frameworks for your organization
  • Refocusing both business and IT on what matters by focusing on Process and Data connection
  • Adopting a DAMA-style approach to managing master data as an intelligent regulatory response to treat data as an asset
